St Catherine's Monastery Tours from Sharm and Cairo

You are in Sharm El Sheikh or Dahab and want the sunrise

This is what most people book, and most of the listings here are versions of it. A minibus collects you from the hotel between 8 and 9 pm, drives about three hours through the checkpoints to St Catherine, and hands you to a Bedouin guide at the foot of the mountain around 2 am. You climb for two to three hours, wait for the sun at 2,285 m, walk down in daylight, eat, and reach the monastery gate as it opens.

The four differ in price, in language, in whether the protectorate fee is included, and in what they say about the monastery.

You want the monastery, not the mountain

One listing does this. The Sharm Club private tour leaves Sharm in the morning in a private car, reaches the gate inside the opening window, spends two hours inside with a guide who speaks Italian, English or Russian, and drives back by way of Dahab for lunch on the beach. It includes the protectorate fee and the museum entry that the sunrise tours leave out, and it is the only tour here where you arrive rested.

At $185 it costs more than three sunrise tours put together, and its 26 reviews average 4.8, the highest on the page. A German reviewer in February 2026 called the drive long and unexciting and the monastery worth every minute of it.

You are starting in Cairo

Cairo to St Catherine is about six hours by road, under the Suez Canal and past the springs at Oyun Musa, so the tours run over two days: drive on day one, sleep in St Catherine, climb at 2 am on day two, visit the monastery, drive home. Sun Pyramids charges $319 with a private vehicle, a hotel night and three meals; guides come in seven languages. Emo Tours charges $370, puts you in the Sheikh Mousa Bedouin Camp for the night, includes dinner and breakfast but not the day-one lunch, and runs in English only. Pickups from Cairo airport, New Cairo, Sheikh Zayed or the New Administrative Capital cost extra on the Sun Pyramids listing.

You want a guide to yourself

Three of the listings are private: Sinai Hikes at $134, Sharm Club at $185 and the Cairo trip from Sun Pyramids, which offers a private group. Sinai Hikes is the one company on the page based in St Catherine itself. Your guide is a Jebeliya Bedouin from the tribe that has walked this mountain since Justinian's day, the pace is yours, and the listing is the only one that prints the route in metres: 850 m from the checkpoint to the monastery, a 4.15 km trail, then 750 stone steps.

The court ruling and the closed gate

On 28 May 2025 the Ismailia Court of Appeal issued a 160-page decision on the ownership of the monastery's land and surrounding property, recognising the monks' right to use the site but not to own it. The Greek government and the Ecumenical Patriarch protested; the Egyptian foreign ministry called the threat to the monastery a rumour and said the surrounding land had been designated a nature reserve. On 6 June 2025 the twenty monks closed the gate to all visitors and suspended the guesthouse, an act without precedent in the monastery's recorded history.

In July the monastic council voted to remove Archbishop Damianos, who left for Greece. Tour operators cancelled excursions through the summer. Background and dates: Orthodox Times and EWTN.

Reopening, and what the listings show since

Groups were walking through the gate again by 11 September 2025, and the monastery has received visitors through the 2025-26 season without a further shutdown. The tour listings on this page carry verified reviews dated from November 2025 to the end of August 2026 that describe the Burning Bush, the basilica and the well, which is the practical proof that the visit happens. What has not been resolved is the legal question, so a second closure is possible and would come without warning.

If the gate is shut on your day, the sunrise tours still run the climb; the monastery stop is the part that drops out, and none of the listings here prices the two separately.

The closure that will affect you: the weekly one

The ordinary schedule matters far more than the 2025 dispute. The monastery admits visitors for about three hours a morning, five days a week, and every sunrise tour arrives at the same time as every other sunrise tour. Book a Saturday departure from Sharm and you reach the gate on Sunday morning, when it is locked.

The Dunas listing says so in plain words; most of the others leave you to work it out. The hours and closed days below are the ones to check before choosing a date.

Opening hours by day

Visiting hours are short and the sacristy museum keeps its own. Times below come from the monastery's page, from the Sinai Hikes listing, which prints 8:45 to 11:45 on regular days, and from Wilderness Ventures' published schedule.

Feast days when the gate stays shut

The OceanAir listing prints the closure list it works from, with the note that dates may vary from year to year because the Orthodox calendar moves. Confirm against the monastery's calendar before you fix a date.

What you pay at the gate, and what the tour has already paid

Entry to the church and courtyard is free. Two charges sit around it. The St Katherine Protectorate collects an area fee on the road in, and the sacristy museum with the icons and manuscripts charges a small ticket in Egyptian pounds.

The rules inside

Shoulders and knees covered; sleeveless shirts are turned away at the gate, and one OceanAir reviewer in July 2026 lost her visit for arriving in shorts after the climb. No photography inside the basilica and no recordings anywhere on the route. The route itself is fixed and short: north gate, courtyard, the Well of Moses, the Church of the Transfiguration, the Chapel of the Burning Bush behind it, the sacristy, and out.

The library that holds the manuscripts is closed to general visitors; the sacristy shows a selection. Organised commentary inside the church is not permitted, so your guide explains at the gate and you walk the route in silence. The camel path and the Steps of Repentance

Two routes leave the monastery. The camel path, Siket El Bashait, winds up for about two and a half hours of walking, and camels can carry you along it. The Steps of Repentance, Siket Sayidna Musa, are 3,750 stone steps cut by a monk in the ravine behind the walls, steeper and shorter.

Both meet at Elijah's Basin below the summit, where the last 750 steps begin, and no camel goes up those. Group tours use the camel path at night because it is wide and safe in the dark. One Cairo reviewer on a Saturday in March 2026 found the Steps closed and had to take the path; that happens, and the guide decides.

What the numbers mean for your legs

The Sinai Hikes listing breaks its route into 850 m from the tourist police checkpoint to the monastery, a winding 4.15 km trail, and then the 750 steps. A British reviewer in July 2026 called it a 7 km trek up stones that turns steep in the last kilometre, and she was glad of a hotel guest's walking pole. The town sits at about 1,600 m and the summit at 2,285 m, so the climb is roughly 700 vertical metres, most of it in the last hour.

Tea huts appear every couple of kilometres selling tea, coffee and juice for cash, and the last hut before the top rents thick blankets for about 200 Egyptian pounds. Take one; the same reviewer arrived in a vest top from the effort and was cold within minutes of stopping.

The camel, and who should take it

Bedouins with camels wait at the bottom and along the path, and the ride to the foot of the final steps is paid in cash on the spot, so bring pounds. OceanAir's listing says the operator does not recommend it; an Italian reviewer of the Sun Pyramids tour in July 2026 called it highly recommended for anyone unfit, elderly or with children, and a Hungarian reviewer in her fifties on the Emo Tours trip said she would not have reached the top without it. Neither is wrong.

The camel removes the two-hour walk and leaves the 750 steps, which nobody can remove. If your knees or lungs are a question, a camel plus the steps is a realistic morning; the full walk plus the steps is a hard one.

Drive times the listings work from

Every tour here is road transport with hotel pickup. The listings quote the figures below; checkpoints can add to them and the tours warn that they do.

Checkpoints, convoys and the passport

The Sinai interior is a controlled area. Vehicles pass military checkpoints on the way in, the Sharm Club listing states that its tour runs under convoy, and the Sun Pyramids tours ask for a passport copy two days ahead so the permit can be issued. At the mountain itself, Sinai Hikes registers each walker at the Tourism Police office before the climb.

An Austrian reviewer of the Sun Pyramids Cairo trip wrote in 2023 that the transfer worked despite the checkpoints; a German family in October 2025 on Sharm Club's tour exchanged passport data the evening before and passed every checkpoint without a delay. Carry the passport itself, not a photo of it.

Doing it without a tour

Possible, and it is how backpackers staying in Dahab do it: a shared taxi to St Catherine, a night in the village, a guide hired at the mountain, and the monastery on foot. The tour price buys three things you would otherwise arrange yourself, the permit paperwork, the transport through the checkpoints at night, and the Bedouin guide the police require. From Sharm, a private taxi for the same round trip costs about what two seats on the OceanAir tour do, without the guide.

The five things that decide the night

Shoes with grip for uneven granite and a descent on tired legs. A warm layer and a windproof one for the summit in every month, with gloves and a hat from November to March. A headtorch of your own.

Long trousers and a top with sleeves, worn or carried, for the monastery gate, where shorts and sleeveless shirts are refused. Egyptian pounds in small notes for tea, the blanket at the top, a camel and tips. Tipping, since nobody prints it

A Sun Pyramids Cairo reviewer in 2024 wrote that the driver, the Egyptologist and the Bedouin guide each expected a tip and that nobody had said how much, which turned into a real cost on a trip that was not cheap to begin with. The Bedouin guides work for a fixed fee from the operator that runs to about 650 Egyptian pounds for a whole night on the mountain, so the tip matters to them. Budget in pounds for the Bedouin guide, separately for the driver and the tour guide, and ask the operator on WhatsApp beforehand; every listing here says the operator makes contact before the tour.

What the tour price covers that a taxi does not

Three things. The permit for the Sinai interior, which the operators arrange from your passport copy. Transport through the night with a driver who knows the checkpoints.

And the Bedouin guide, who is compulsory on the mountain and charged by the police-set tariff to anyone who arrives without one. On the Sun Pyramids tour all of that is $51 per person, which is less than a taxi from Sharm for one. The independent version, with the bus and taxi prices, the guesthouse and the sunset-climb plan, is worked through on the visiting without a tour guide.

When alone is better

If the monastery is the point rather than the sunrise, the independent visit wins. Sleep in St Catherine, walk to the gate at 8:45 on a weekday, and you have the courtyard before the sunrise buses arrive from the mountain at nine. The camel-path climb in daylight for sunset instead of sunrise is quieter and warmer, and the descent is in the dark with a guide's torch.

The two-day Cairo tours give you the night in the village without the arranging; the Sharm Club private day gives you the unhurried monastery without the night.

The monastery guesthouse

Single and double rooms with a few larger ones, every room with its own bathroom, dinner and breakfast in the rate, lunch on request, and a courtyard snack bar for tea and coffee between meals. Bookings go through the monastery by phone, Viber or WhatsApp on the number published on its guest house page. The guesthouse closed with the gate in June 2025 and reopened with it; the Emo Tours Cairo listing names it as one of its overnight options alongside the Morgenland Hotel.

Rooms are plain. The reason to stay is the position: the climb starts at the door and the gate opens before the buses arrive.

Camps and hotels the tours use

The Emo Tours trip sleeps at the Sheikh Mousa Bedouin Camp, which a Hungarian reviewer in February 2026 called acceptable by European standards with a good dinner. The Sun Pyramids trip uses a hotel in St Catherine of a category it reserves the right to swap; a 2023 reviewer found the room fine and the food less so. Independent travellers from Dahab use the village lodges, where a bed ran about 500 pounds a night in 2024.

Nobody stays in St Catherine for the hotel; you stay for the 2 am start without a three-hour bus first.

The region

South Sinai, where the monastery, Sharm El Sheikh and Dahab all sit, is a different place from North Sinai, where the Egyptian army fought an insurgency through the 2010s. The US State Department keeps most of the peninsula outside Sharm at its highest advisory level; the UK and most European governments confine their warnings to the north. The checkpoints, the convoy rule on some tours and the passport-copy requirement are the state's answer, and the tours on this page carry verified bookings every month of the past year.

A Belgian woman travelling alone on the Emo Tours trip in December 2025 wrote that she started in defence mode and felt safe from the moment she met the guide and driver. Read your own government's page and decide; the operators run daily either way.

The mountain

The climb is the risk you can manage. It is done in the dark, at altitude, on uneven stone, by people who have not slept. The guide sets a pace with breaks; the huts sell tea; the camel exists for anyone struggling on the path.

The listings' exclusion lists are the honest guide to who should not go: pregnant women on every one that prints exclusions, people with heart or breathing problems on two, wheelchair users on all, and anyone who has dived in the last 24 hours. The descent, not the ascent, is where knees and ankles go; a walking pole helps and a July 2026 reviewer used hers the whole way down.

The oldest continuously inhabited Christian monastery

Empress Helena, Constantine's mother, ordered a chapel beside the Burning Bush in the fourth century; the pilgrim Egeria found it there in 383. Justinian I walled the chapel into a fortress and built the basilica between 548 and 565, with a garrison of soldiers whose descendants, the Jebeliya Bedouin, still guard the walls and guide the mountain. The monastery has never been abandoned, sacked or burned in fifteen centuries, which is why the sixth-century mosaic of the Transfiguration in the apse is still where it was set.

UNESCO inscribed the Saint Catherine Area in 2002 for its meaning to Judaism, Christianity and Islam; the UNESCO listing carries the citation.

The library and the codex that left

The manuscript collection is the second largest of early codices in the world after the Vatican's: more than three thousand manuscripts in Greek, Arabic, Syriac, Coptic, Georgian and Latin. Its most famous volume is no longer here. Constantin von Tischendorf took leaves of the fourth-century Codex Sinaiticus away in 1844 and the bulk of it in 1859 on loan to the Russian tsar; the monastery has always called it theft, Stalin sold it to the British Library in 1933, and Tischendorf's signed receipt hangs in the sacristy for visitors to read.

The library itself admits scholars only; the sacristy museum shows the icons, including the twelfth-century Ladder of Divine Ascent.

A mosque inside the walls

A Fatimid mosque built in 1106 stands inside the monastery, still used on special occasions, and the sacristy displays a copy of the Ashtiname, the covenant of protection the monks say Muhammad granted them in 623. Sultan Selim I confirmed the protection in the sixteenth century and took the original to Istanbul, leaving a certified copy. The relationship the document describes is the one you see at the gate: Muslim Bedouin guides handing Christian pilgrims and secular hikers to Orthodox monks and back.
